Sierra Documentary — Legends of Adventure

Last updated: May 13, 2026

Overview

Legends of Adventure: The Story of Sierra On-Line is a feature-length documentary about Ken Williams, Roberta Williams, and the founding-era story of Sierra On-Line — the company that pioneered the graphical adventure game and trained a generation of designers whose work the vault catalogs. The film is produced by Decently Creative, the team behind the Prime Video docuseries Gamebreakers, and is the first feature documentary to give the Williamses an extended on-camera account of their founding-and-departure arc, including why they returned to game development with Colossal Cave 3D Adventure in 2023.12

The project ran a successful crowdfunding campaign in July–August 2024 across Kickstarter (initially) and Backerkit, where active community updates have continued through 2026.345 As of mid-2026 the film is in post-production, with a complete rough cut and a confirmed 2026 release target.6

This page is a vault-side tracker for the documentary’s interviewees, production milestones, and external coverage. Per vault editorial policy, only verified items appear here — dates that could not be confirmed from a primary source are deliberately omitted rather than assumed.

Subject Matter

The film centers on the founding and growth of Sierra On-Line under Ken and Roberta Williams (1979 onward), the company’s mid-1990s commercial peak, and the Williamses’ 20+ year departure from the industry before their 2020s return with Colossal Cave. The documentary also surveys the broader rise of the graphical adventure-game genre that Sierra catalyzed, drawing in voices from across the era.1216

Production materials referenced in Backerkit updates include archival photographs, period videos, internal Sierra documents, personal photographs from key Sierra figures, and contemporary news clips originally broadcast on CNN.6

Interviewees

Sierra principals

Confirmed industry-veteran interviewees (selected)

  • John Romero — co-founder of id Software (Doom, Quake); described in production updates as a longtime Sierra fan; interview shot at his home in Ireland during 2025.14
  • Additional Sierra designers and adventure-game industry figures: announced by the production team across multiple Backerkit updates; the team has periodically published “another game legend joins the story” milestones.615

Vault-policy note on interviewee lists

The production team has not yet released a complete public list of on-camera contributors. The vault will populate this section incrementally as Backerkit updates or external interviews confirm each name. Speculation from secondary aggregator sites is not added here.

Connections to Vault Topics

The documentary is the most significant single piece of Sierra journalism in production during the vault’s 2025–2026 coverage window, and it should be linked from the major personnel pages it touches:
