1980s: The Adventure Game Pioneers

Sierra (renamed from On-Line Systems in 1982) created the graphic adventure genre with Mystery House and built it into an empire with King’s Quest. By decade’s end, they had launched five flagship series: King’s Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Police Quest, and Quest for Glory.

1990s: The Golden Age

Sierra’s peak decade. SCI engine games reached artistic heights, Dynamix and Impressions joined the family, and Sierra expanded into simulations, strategy, and online gaming. Over 260 releases this decade.

2000s: Corporate Transitions

Sierra was acquired by Vivendi, then absorbed into Activision. Adventure game development ended, but Valve titles thrived and city builders continued. Fan projects began filling the void.
